The Orchestra
Lambeth Wind Orchestra is a community music ensemble based in Herne Hill in South London. The orchestra was founded in 2008, and our members come from across London and beyond.
Our instrumentation is loosely based on the modern British/American wind orchestra, with around 40 players in total. We have around 6 flutes (+ piccolo) and 10 clarinets (+ Eb and bass) for a greater depth and balance of sound between the wind and brass sections, but most of the orchestra’s members play individual parts.
We're always keen to hear from people who would like to join, and you can find out more about our instrumentation and current vacancies here.
The orchestra plays a wide range of music, including original works for wind orchestra; marches; orchestral transcriptions; music from film, TV and musicals; and arrangements of pop music and jazz. This means that we programme a much more diverse selection of pieces than is found in the repertory of traditional marching/military bands. We also perform concertos occasionally, giving our members the opportunity to appear as soloists with the orchestra.
We generally have two main concerts a year alongside an exciting programme of bandstand performances over the summer and occasional community engagements.
Our Conductor
The band is conducted by Samuel Huston. You can find out more about Sam on his website.
